HIPAA is an acronym for The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. The purpose of HIPPA is twofold. Title I of HIPAA protects health insurance coverage for workers and their families when they change or lose their jobs. Title II of HIPAA, known as the Administrative Simplification (AS) provisions, requires the establishment of national standards for electronic health care transactions and national identifiers for providers, health insurance plans, and employers. Proficient providers know that HIPPA violations can cause problems for both patients and employers of the violators of the act and the other team members that serve these patients.. Crossing the line, many times or even just once, can create trust issues between patients and providers and public service agencies that can have enormous emotional, financial, and even physical consequences, such as delayed health care due to trust issues or reluctance of a provider to provide service to a potentially litigious patient.. Having been in the positions of both a patient and a volunteer provider, I use this cache to honor those in the health services fields who honor their patients rights and protect their privacy.
