Geocache Description:

Located in Island Lake County Park
Park Hours are from ½ hr before sunrise until ½ hr after sunset

Since there are no 'South Carolina' caches in Minnesota to help folks qualify for a certain Challenge outside the metro area, I decided it was time to get one out there. Not being one to just throw one down with 'South Carolina" as the title, I was looking for a relationship between Minnesota and South Carolina but couldn't find much (no streets, no avenues, no lakes, etc) other than sports- or political-related 'news'. One link that did pop up though, dealt with manganese mining in South Carolina. Since the elemental symbol for manganese is Mn and the state abbreviation for Minnesota is MN, I figured that was as close as I was going to get to a tie-in.

Further research turned up the fact that manganese production is pretty much non-existent in the US now-a-days. The production that occurs in South Carolina consists of manganiferous material that has a natural manganese content of <5%. Apparently the material is used for coloring bricks.

Original title was to be "Manganese Mining in South Carolina" but since the cache is located in Island Lake County Park, the park name needed to be included in the title

Impressive, eh?
