HISTORY OF FOLEY, ALABAMA
The City of Foley, Ala. was founded in 1905 by John Burton Foley of Chicago, Illinois. Foley, who was in the pharmaceutical business, heard about this area from a railroad land agent as they traveled by train to attend funeral services for President William McKinley in 1901. Foley visited Alabama the following year, liked the area, and consequently bought thousands of acres of land. He formed the Magnolia Land Company and began selling off acreage to those in Chicago who wanted to move south and take advantage of the rich farmland. Much of the area surrounding Foley was densely forested in pine trees, and logging and turpentine production became the main industries in the area.
The first documented citizen of the newly formed town of Foley was W.H. Monteith, who came with his family by covered wagon from Iowa, and settled in the Magnolia Springs area in 1898. Monteith later moved to Foley, and in addition to opening a general store, was granted the contract for a U.S. Post Office in Foley.
The Bay Minette-Fort Morgan Railway, a branch of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad (“L&N”), was built in 1905 for travel to Foley, and to haul logs to the sawmill. John B. Foley supplied the ties for the line. Mr. Foley also surveyed lands at his own expense, and built approximately one hundred miles of roadway without any county or state funding. Mr. Foley is also credited with building sawmills, sugar mills and school houses.
The town of Foley was officially incorporated on Jan. 8, 1915, with its first mayor, G.I. Weatherly, being sworn in on March 3, 1915. The city of Foley, known fondly as “The Forward City,” has changed and grown over the years, and is poised to celebrate its centennial in January 2015.
