The Area
Helsington Barrows is a great spot on the side of Scout Scar, which is popular with dogs, joggers, and walkers. A network of paths link the various corners, with many old trees dotted across the open grass and rock 'plains'. The rock is finely bedded limestone which weathers into 'plates'. At the top of the area you can extend your adventures further if you wish, out along the Scar. There are other good caches nearby: Scrabling Around and Alas!, and don't miss Warriners to the east.
Access
The easiest place to start is at the parking waypoint shown below, by the kissing gate on the SE edge of the area. Alternatively, walk up from Helsington and the south via Robbos Tunes, or from the Underbarrow road to the north via the 'mushroom' on Scout Scar, or head across the racecourse via Gold Cup.
A map showing the main tracks in the Barrows is available here. Once through the gate, the paths are a mix of grass and rock, and just an occasional squelch. They can be bumpy and a bit rough but are generally quite pleasant. The site slopes up towards the top of the Scar, but the inclines are mostly gentle.
The Cache
The first cache is hidden in a great old larch at the mossy junction of some paths. You're looking for a small screw top vial. It's an easy short ascent into its gentle embrace - good warm up for No.2!
These caches are hidden with the kind permission of the National Trust.
