Geocache Description:

Fifth in a series of caches on a short walk around Helsington Barrows, a beautiful area of craggy limestone with good views as we reach this edge.

After rooting around, continue SW to the edge of this raised area, where good views to the south and Morecambe Bay start to open up. A small limestone edge has patches of loose rock, and small erratics can be spotted in amongst the limestone. The rock looks to be Silurian mudstone and occasional sandstone probably from the 'Windermere Super Group' of rocks which surround these raised 'islands' of carboniferous limestone that form Scout Scar, Whitbarrow, and Hampsfell.

You can test your geological knowledge with this cache. It's hidden under a moderate sized erratic and two others form a straight line with it. Nearby is the mound of a meadow ant nest, fairly rare except on limestone areas. In theory, the south facing side is often a longer slope to help catch the sun's warmth, with a steeper side to the north, which can be used as a rough navigational aid. We've done a survey, and it's not entirely precise or easy to judge sometimes! It is clear on some of them.

PLEASE DO NOT MOVE THE BIG ROCK, ACCESS THE CACHE FROM THE SIDE.  DO NOT PUT THE ROCK ON THE BOX!
