Geocache Description:

KL Troop, a compass course
 ( Learning to take a Compass bearing)
This mirco cache is placed near 1st Kings Langley Scout hall, and is used to help scouts learn to take a compass bearing. It can be found day or night but would be easier at night using a torch. 
There is plenty of parking outside the Hall and Community Centre.


You will need a compass with bearing points or an I-phone that has a compass. Most GPS units would also have a built in Compass with bearings.
Please replace the cache as you have found it.A directional compass is shown below. 
The four main directions of a compass are known as cardinal points.  They are north (N), east (E), south (S) and west (W).  Sometimes, the half-cardinal points of north-east (NE), north-west (NW), south-east (SE) and south-west (SW) are shown on the compass.  The above compass shows degree measurements from 0° to 360° in 10° intervals with:
  • north representing 0° or 360°
  • east representing 90°
  • south representing 180°
  • west representing 270°
 To take a bearing turn the compass housing degree dial to the required degree until it lines up with the direction of travel arrow, now turn the compass in your hand until the Magnetic needle (Red) lines up with North and (Black) lines up with south. Now follow the direction of travel arrow.

To find the southing coordinates, start at the listed coordinates and take a bearing of
300* to find a white reflector and go to that reflector
now  take a bearing of
64* to find a white reflector and go to that reflector
Now  take a bearing of
348* to find a white reflector and go to that reflector
Now take a bearing of
232* to find a white reflector and go to that reflector
Now take a bearing of
340* to find a white reflector and go to that reflector
Now take a bearing of
28* to find a white reflector and go to that reflector
Now take a bearing of
106* to find a white reflector and go to that reflector
Now take a bearing of
324* to find a white reflector and go to that reflector with the blue peg below it.
Where you will find a tag at the base of tree with the coordinates for the southing.


Now go back to the listed starting coordinates to find the easting’s and
 Now take a bearing of
180* to find a red reflector and go to that reflector
Now take a bearing of
134* to find a red reflector and go to that reflector
Now take a bearing of
240* to find a red reflector and go to that reflector
Now take a bearing of
332* to find a red reflector and go to that reflector
Now take a bearing of
30* to find a red reflector and go to that reflector
Now take a bearing of
295* to find a red reflector and go to that reflector
Now take a bearing of
320* to find a red reflector and go to that reflector
Now take a bearing of
92* to find a red reflector and go to that reflector
Where you will find a tag on the other side of tree with the coordinates for the Easting’s

Now that you have both the Southing and Easting co-ordinates, you can go to the cache location and find the cache.
