Geocache Description:

St. Declan's Well dates from the 5th century.

The well is adjacent to the ancient remains of St. Declan's monastery. St. Declan was a member of the tribe of the Deise, and was responsible for converting the Deise to Christianity, long before St. Patrick arrived in Ireland. He was buried in the precinct of the monastery.

The annual feast day of St. Declan is the 24th July, known as Pattern Day. Great crowns descend on Ardmore for the pattern festival, held annually. In the late 19th century, tens of thousands of pilgrims  attended the prayers at the Holy Well on Pattern Day. The crowns are well down from those times of steadfast allegiance to the Catholic church, but you will still find several hundred continuing the tradition.

Stealth is required, especially during fine weather in July.

The cache is a camoflaged plastic container, placed outside the grounds of the Holy Well.
