Het gebied Woensel-Noord is ingedeeld in vier wijken en 21 buurten.

Acht is een buurt in de wijk Achtse Molen, in het stadsdeel Woensel-Noord in de Nederlandse stad Eindhoven.

Kerkdorp Acht is een dorp volledig ingeklemd tussen de Rijksweg 2 en Eindhoven. Het behoort tot Eindhoven (stadsdeel Woensel). Acht is per openbaar vervoer te bereiken met buslijn 8. In 2008 had Acht 3800 inwoners.


Op grond van het feit dat er sprake is van "watre" als een der begeerlijkheden in het Achtse zou de naam Acht daarvan afgeleid kunnen zijn. Daarbij moet gedacht worden aan achwa, of aqua. Er liepen inderdaad enige beken op de verder droge heide.

Een andere verklaring is dat de naam Acht is afgeleid van "achte", dat rechtsgebied betekent.


Op het grondgebied van Acht zijn tal van archeologische vondsten gedaan, die wijzen op vroege bewoning. Zo werd op de plaats waar de Ekkersrijt de Oirschotsedijk kruist, tijdens de ontginningen in 1928, een urnenveld aangetroffen. Later zijn nog andere urnenvelden en grafheuvels ontdekt. Ook bestaan er mesolithische en neolithische vindplaatsen. Daarnaast werd in 1992 een vindplaats uit de Romeinse tijd ontdekt.

Acht werd voor het eerst vermeld in juli 1303, toen hertog Jan II van Brabant gemeenterechten verleende:
Jan II hertog van Brabant verkoopt aan de lieden van Strijp gemene gronden, genoemd Achtermere binnen nader omschreven grenzen, onder bedinging van een voorlijf en een jaarlijkse erfcijns van 40 schellingen.
Anno Domini millesirno trecentesimo tertio.


Er was hier sprake van de grond in de omgeving van Welpscoet waar men moet denken aan de huidige Oirschotsedijk en de Wielewaal. Het was zeer vruchtbare grond met meertjes, beken en grasland. Natuurlijk was de nederzetting ouder dan deze schriftelijke vermelding.

Uiteindelijk was er sprake van twee nederzettingen: Au Acht (Oud Acht), het huidige kerkdorp, en Nij Acht (Nieuw Acht), dat ten westen ervan ligt, waar ontginningen waren.

De heer van Woensel reserveerde in 1307 al het vrije gebruik van de beken en weiden die deel uitmaakten van het oorspronkelijke bezit van de onderdanen, die het eerder vrije eigendom tot het zijne had gemaakt. Hij spreekt daar van het "bos" dat men Achte heet. Het bos strekte zich uit van de Grote Beek tot een strook waar nu het bedrijventerrein Ekkersrijt ligt. Naar het westen toe zal het gebied van Tegenbosch, Hurk en Mispelhoef nog bij het bos hebben gehoord.

Hoewel Acht sinds de Middeleeuwen tot de parochie van Woensel behoorde, was er einde 16e eeuw toch een kapel die vermoedelijk aan Sint-Antonius abt was gewijd. Na 1648 werd deze kapel gesloten en ze is onder meer als tiendschuur en, in de 19e eeuw, als woonhuis gebruikt. In Acht heeft sinds 1715 ook een schuurkerk gestaan.

De huidige kerk, eveneens aan Sint-Antonius abt gewijd, werd gebouwd in 1886. Ze werd uitgebreid in 1928 en 1951.

In de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw rukte de stad Eindhoven op, met woonwijken en snelwegen, terwijl aan de westzijde de bedrijvigheid van Eindhoven Airport toenam.

Acht is a neighborhood in the District of Achtse Molen, in the city part Woensel-Noord in the Dutch city of Eindhoven.


Acht (Acht) parish is a village completely wedged between Highway A2 and Eindhoven. It belongs to Eindhoven (district Woensel). Acht is by public transport with bus number 8. In 2008 eight 3800 inhabitants.


Based on the fact that there is "watre" as one of the lusts in the area of Acht, the name Acht may be derived from that. It should be envisaged achwa, or aqua. There were indeed some streams on the furthermore dry heath.

Another explanation is that the name Acht is derived from "achte", meaning jurisdiction.


On the territory of Acht there have been numerous archaeological finds, indicating early habitation. E.g. at the place where the Ekkersrijt crossed the Oirschotsedijk an urnfield was found during the reclamation in 1928. Subsequently, other fields of urns and burial sites were discovered. There are also Mesolithic and Neolithic sites. In addition, in 1992 a site from the Roman period was discovered.

Acht was first mentioned in July 1303, when Duke John II of Brabant granted city rights:
John II Duke of Brabant sells to the people of Strijp the common lands, called Achtermere, within specified limits, under conditions of a tenancy and an annual fee of 40 shillings.

It was intended as the area of land in the vicinity of Welpscoet, where one should think of the current Oirschotsedijk and the Wielewaal. It was very fertile land with lakes, streams and grasslands. Of course, the settlement was older than this written statement.

Finally, there were two settlements: Au Acht (Old Acht), the current parish, and Nij Acht (New Acht), which lies to the west, where mining took place.

The Lord of Woensel retained in 1307 all the free use of the streams and meadows that were part of the original property of the citizens, after reserving the previously free property as his own. He speaks of the "forest" that was called Achte. The forest stretched from the Grote Beek (Great Brook) to a strip where now the industrial-area Ekkersrijt lies. To the west, the areas of Tegenbosch, Hurk en Mispelhoef belonged to the forest as well.

Although Acht belonged to the parish of Woensel since the Middle Ages, end 16th century there was a chapel suspected of being devoted to Saint Anthony Abbot. After 1648, this chapel was closed and used as tithe barn and, in the 19th century, used as a residence. In Acht also stood a barn church since 1715.

The present church, also dedicated to St. Anthony Abbot, was built in 1886. It was extended in 1928 and 1951.

In the second half of the twentieth century the city of Eindhoven expanded strongly, with residential areas and highways, while to the west the activity of Eindhoven Airport increased.
