Weare Giffard Hall.
15th Cent. Manor House.
From this cache there is a fine view across the River Torridge to Weare Giffard Hall - which is not to be confused with the village hall. Weare Giffard Hall was home to the Fortescue family from 1454, when the Weare heiress Elizabeth Denzil married the second son of Sir John Fortescue. The exterior of the house has fine carving and the interior boasts many remarkable features. The main hall is itself outstanding. It’s Hammerbeam roof is divided into four bays and is decorated with seated greyhounds and dragons, symbolic of Henry VII. There is a very fine minstrel gallery with a carved front containing the heads of four Bishops of Exeter. Another fine feature is the six Misericord Stalls which may have come from an abbey at the time of the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539. The rest of the house boasts fine Elizabethan panelling, ornate plasterwork and Jacobean fireplaces. It was an important stronghold in the 17th century being a Royalist fortified house. It was besieged by the Parliamentarians in 1646 and the only damage was to the outer defences between the house and the River Torridge. Now, only the gatehouse remains as a reminder of the original defences. The site fell into neglect during the 17th century but was later restored in 1832 by George Matthew Fortescue. It is now in private ownership and not open to the general public.
