Geocache Description:

Awatuna is named after the stream here which was famed for the abundance of eels, which were a favourite food of local Maori. Deforestation and intensive agriculture threatens many waterways but the Taranaki Regional Council has been helped farmers out my encouraging fencing and riparian plantings. Yes, there still eels in the Awatuna stream, but nowhere the plentitude there used to be.
