Geocache Description:

A simple cache on near the intersection of SH 45 and Rama Rd, South Taranaki which is cache 8 on a powertrail of 45 caches on SH45. Please park well off the road (preferably on Rama Rd) and watch for traffic as locals tend to blatt around the hairpin. With young ones, watch for boxthorn, Argentinian toetoe, hemlock and ragwort too.

No, this road was not named after a pair of Hindu gods, but given the dissension and discord between Maori and Pakeha during the 1860s Land Wars, a force for peace compassion and tolerance would have been welcome. That came, later in the 1880s when Te Whiti and Te Tohu championed a campaign of peaceful civil disobedience in response continuing European settler encroachment.

Rama was born on 9th Day (now celebrated across India as Ram Navmi) in Chaitra Lunar Month in Ayodhya, India when Moon & Jupiter were rising in the east in Cancer sign and four other planets (Sun, Mars, Saturn, Venus) were exalted in their exaltation signs.  Pushkar Bhatnagar has been able to establish in his research that the star positions at Rama's birth match the date of "10th Jan 5114BC" around 12:30pm local time; there is no other match for these planetary positions. Prior to the eleventh century there were no temples to Rama, since he was viewed as human.Rama bhakti poetry starts to emerge only in the sixteenth century.

Rama is one of the many popular figures and deities in Hinduism.   Rama is referred to within Hinduism as Maryada Purushottama literally the Perfect Man or Lord of Self-Control or Lord of Virtue. Rama is the husband of Sitar, whom Hindus consider to be an avatar of Lakshmi and the embodiment of perfect womanhood. Rama's life and journey is one of perfect adherence to dharma despite harsh tests of life and time. He is pictured as the ideal man and the perfect human. Rama's piety and virtue attract powerful and devoted allies such as Hanuman, the Monkey king.  The legend of Rama is deeply influential and popular in the subcontintent and South-East Asia.  Rama is revered for his unending compassion, courage and devotion to religious values and duty.

Krishna is a Hindu deity, a "complete" avatar (or "incarnation") of the Preserver God, Vishnu. Krishna is often described and portrayed as an infant or young boy playing a flute or as a youthful prince giving direction and guidance as in the Bhagavad Gita. The stories of Krishna appear across a broad spectrum of Hindu philosophica and theological traditions. They portray him in various perspectives: a god-child, a prankster, a model lover, a divine hero and the Supreme Being. The principal scriptures discussing Krishna's story are the Mahabharata, the Harivamsa, the Bhagavata Purana and the Vishnu Purana. Worship of a deity of Krishna can be traced to as early as 4th century BC.Worship of Krishna as the Supreme Being arose in the Middle Ages in the context of the bhakti movement. From the 10th century AD, Krishna became a favourite subject in performing arts and regional traditions of devotion developed for forms of Krishna.  Since the 1960s the worship of Krishna has also spread in the West, largely due to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.
