Geocache Description:

Just a few yards from the cache site, you will see a sign for Spittlefield lane, if you choose to walk down here to the other end you will see priory close which is the most likely spot that the Leper hospital would have been situated, there would have also been a chapel, accomodation for the lepers and a graveyard. This hospital was also known as the hospital of the blessed Stephen and Thomas and was the first hospital to have been built in the town. There is nothing left to view of it unfortunately. Opposite the carpark in West Street there are some very interesting stone buildings, 3 old stone cottages and plantagenet house, there are plaques for you to read about the history of these places, well worth a read. Walk around the corner into St Johns Rd and their in front of you you will see part of an old white stone wall with a door in it attached to house number One, this is actual remains of The former St Johns hospital precinct walls, St Johns was the second hospital to be built in New Romney in the mid 13thc. look directly across the road from this wall and you will be looking at the site of the burial ground for the hospital. Please be aware at all times that in some places along these roads there are no footpaths, so look out for traffic. If you Dont sign the log book dont log it online.
