I had a cache here, before the Cotton Gin was taken away. Wanted to put a new one in its place and give some history about thie area.
Years ago this area was thriving. Then turn into a basic ghost town. The GM&O railroad was a big part of the community when in 1927 a golden spike was driven at New Fannin. J. L. Long built a general store here in 1926. In 1933, Sallis Lumber company moved a sawmill into the area. In the early thirties the G.M. & O. railroad built a large elevated concrete platform by the tracks for loading cotton onto the cars. Somtimes local teenagers used it as a dance floor, music from a hand cranked Victolia. There was an old school, from what I was told it was right accross the road from the cache site, Governor H. L. Whitfield was born here. He got most of his here. Fannin had two lakes, Blue Lake and Three Prong Lake, both with club houses and memberships needed. Allen Lawrence built his general store in the community, giving it a total of three stores. Then- in 1940 the Sallis mill burned. 1941 the Griffin mill moved away as most of the timber had been cut. Population dropped to less than a dozen people. Then the Railroad discontinuing its route through Fannin and took up the tracks. (You can still today see where they were, a few miles down the road) Only three homes and the Lawrence store remaind. Now the folks moving from the city have come and Fannin is thriving again with more homes to name. I would bet most do not know this history and what Fannin use to be... If you have any more history about the area, please email me and I will post.
