A 4x4 experience with a great view, visit the stone age caves at the start of the trail.
The cache is in the Walkerbay Reserve on the "Die Plaat" 4x4 trail. Access to the Reserve is via De Kelders (Die Plaat). An entry permit is required and can be obtained at the gatehouse at De Kelders. Alternatively, permits can be obtained from the Walker Bay Nature Reserve office at Voëlklip during office hours (Monday to Friday 08h00 –16h00). The reserve is open daily between 7am and 7pm.
There are significant records of Middle Stone Age people (from about 85 000 to 65 000 years ago) occupying the Klipgat Cave in the eastern section (Start of the trail) of the reserve. There is also evidence that during the Late Stone Age (about 2 000 years ago), Khoisan people inhabited this site and lived off the plants, fish, shellfish and game in the area. These caves are well worth a visit.
Note:
- Only 4x4 vehicles can access the trail (no 2x4 vehicles, motorcycles or quadbikes are allowed). Please check that your tyre pressure is correct (Lots of Sand).
- It is strictly prohibited and illegal to drive on the beach, dunes or anywhere other than demarcated roads. Vehicles may park only in demarcated parking areas.
