Geocache Description:

This is a small cache with no room for anything but the log, so bring your own pin. You will be visiting our newly restored downtown area that is a work in progress. This is an old town that is trying to rise from the ashes, and escape the bulldozer. Best time to visit is between 6PM and 9PM. You will understand why, if you do. Bring your camera.

At one time this was the location of the Martin (No, not Martin FFG), the Martin Theatre. It was the center of all activity and main stay of this town for many years. However, the night of the debut of the move "Friday the 13th", the theatre was stuck by lightning. This happened on Friday 13th, 1980. No that is NOT a typo. The theatre was struck by lightning on Friday the 13th when the movie Friday the 13th was supposed to play that night, just hours before opening. The theatre sign is spelled theatre with an "re" at the end because this theatre started out life as a live performance theatre. When it has a stage it is a theatre with an "re", when it is a motion picture theater it is a theater with an "er". The stage and balcony remained in this theatre and was used occasionally all the way until the end. It was a beautiful theatre with a large balcony and great back stage. We were always promised that it would be rebuilt right away. That promise weakened as the owner went to work at the nearby Phillips Brothers Hardware store (also out of business now), in time the beautiful marquee was taken down and stored to later be lost. Then the front was boarded up and trees took up residence within the theatre. Fast forward to today and the sidewalks are being replaced and improved, old style lighting has been reinstalled as buildings are collapsing and being bull dozed. This town is in a race against time. Will it get rebuilt and revitalized before all the historic buildings collapse? We hope so. The Rotary Club has bought the property and is in the process of making an outdoor amphitheater inside the old theatre with hopes that this might spark a rebirth. The theatre sign has already had its letters restored and re-illuminated. In time we shall see what will happen. Please take a leisurely stroll through the town, relax on one of the new downtown benches and enjoy a peaceful look around. Someone might even stop and say hello and tell you a story or two.
