Weeley is a small village which stands on the Holland brook valley system which includes Holland brook, Weeley brook, Tendring brook and Pickers ditch, it is a slow running river approximately 16 km long and enters the sea at Holland Haven. In the 16th century Weeley pond which is found opposite the Council offices was a site used to drown suspected witches. Weeley's history dates back to before 1600's but probably its current name came about around 1639 when William Weeley moved in to The Manor. Prior to this the village was known by various names including Weeley, Wheeley, Wilei, Wigley, Wilege and Wyleigh. The pub located at the top of the street is said to have got its name from the fact that Charles II was supposed to have stayed there once while visiting the area as it was a popular place to stop for refreshments between Colchester and the coast. pub is also renowned for being a popular resting place for Dick Turpin during his days as a prolific highwayman. Weeley Heath during the late 1700's and early 1800's was occupied by a large Military barracks but was abandoned in 1815 when fighting in the area ceased. In 1866 the Railway station opened but today although it is still open has only a limited service 6 days per week (closed Sundays). Also over recent years other services within Weeley have closed but it still retains a post office with general stores, a bakers, 3 pubs, campsites, garden centre, car dealer and tyre supplier. It has a regular bus service.. Final coordinates: N51 50.CFA E001 07.DBE
