Geocache Description:

After parking the car, take some time to read the info board nearby. Here you can check out a map of the walking tracks in the area and learn some history about the Jarosite Mine and Ochre pit. As kids we came up here to the nearby dam to hunt for Yabbies and we thought the pit was used for trapping snakes, needless to say we kept well away from it!!!

I recommend the listed parking spot as this gives the best walk into the cache, if the downhill part looks a bit tough to come back up you can loop around towards the Southside junction waypoint and head west back to the carpark. Its about a 4km round trip if you take the easier way back or 3.5km return trip, allow about 2 hours, including some time to discover the snake pit and dam area.
Beginning at the information board in the carpark off Point Addis rd, the trail heads off in an Easterly direction beside  Jarosite rd. At first the trail enters a Stringybark woodland, scattered with Ironbark trees and an understory of Wattle, Grass Trees and ground covers.
Bird life is usually rich and varied with Honeyeaters, Robins, Fantails and wattlebirds the most common.
At the track fork follow the right path South, that leads to the abandoned remains of the old Jarosite (red Ochre) mine. Rich dark red Ochre was first used by local aborigines aeons ago as body paint for ceremonial use. During the 1920's, the ochre pits were mined to supply base pigment for Red Oxide paint. Which was later used by Vicrail. The mine workings once covered an area of 100ha before it closed in 1927.
The container is a white 1litre screw top plastic. Plenty of room for swag and swaps. ftf prizes also!! Original contents include, personal brethaliser, handsome Moe, a crystal, some path tags and a few other surprises!!!
Congratulations!!! juc cacher for being the first to find. I thought you guys would grab it quickly well done.
