One of my favorite novelty Christmas songs is "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas." Gayla Peevey, a native of Oklahoma City, recorded the song for Columbia Records in 1953 when she was just 10 years old. After the song was released, the Oklahoma City Zoo capitalized on the song's popularity and used it as part of their fundraiser to get a hippopotamus at the zoo. Dontations were sent to the zoo to buy "Gayla" a hippo. The campaign was a success and Matilda the hippo was delivered to the zoo on Christmas Eve. Gayla accepted the baby hippo and then donated her to the zoo. Matilda lived in the Oklahoma City Zoo for over forty years. Gayla recorded a number of other children's songs, but none of them caught on like the Hippo song which is still popular today.
