Convict Canal Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Pacmania: Access to this one is no longer easy like it was when the cache was new. It is also not particularly safe to pull over on this busy highway, so it is probably time for it to go. I'm also trying to reduce my out-of-town caches.

Geocache Description:

In the mid 1830's a canal was cut between Murray's Lagoon and Lake George using convict labour.

The Canal

The hand-cut canal was 14-foot deep, 12-foot wide at the top and 150-foot long. The lower part of the canal was faced with stone blocks. Its purpose was to transfer fresh water from Lake George to the brackish lagoon. Unfortunately it was discovered after completion that the lagoon was higher than the lake level and the water flowed the wrong way!

This cache is located where the old highway crossed the canal. The stone facing is visible from GZ.

Please do not access this from the new highway. There is an access road at the turn off waypoint. Care is also required when turning into this road as it is not signposted.
