Geocache Description:

A traditional cache near the main trail going up the Orongorongo Valley. This is approximately 3 hours from the Catchpool Car Park, so requires a bit of work to get to.

Having made many trips into the Orongorongo Valley, I have been pleasantly surprised at how few caches are actually there. Decided on this trip that we would add one or two - turned out to be only this one as our other destination was thwarted by a high river.

We stayed at Haurangi Hut in 2010, and had a great time. This was one of the first of the "re-built" huts by DOC (the latest of which, at this writing, is the nearby Turere Lodge). Haurangi is a 10-bunk hut, with a woodburner stove that REALLY heats the place up once it gets going. Cookware, gas stoves and mattresses are provided, and the hut must be booked in advance through DOC's website.

This cache is not at the hut, but nearby. GPS coverage is spotty because of the dense foliage, so coordinates are within 15 metres of accuracy. Cache is a camoflauged large pill container, and should be re-hidden as found. There is room for very small items and micro-geocoins only (and perhaps very small TBs). Please take care that muggles do not spot you off the trail, although there are not a lot of muggles out this far. Bring your own writing instrument. There is none in the cache. Logs not recorded in the log book will be deleted. Notes on the website not logged as finds do not count as finds, and will be date adjusted if there is a significant delay in logging. Please re-cover as found or better. Thanks!
