Dmitri Mendeleev was born in a small village near Tobolsk in Siberia, in the year 1834. From
these humble beginnings came one of the most important discoveries of modern chemistry: the periodic
table of the elements.

Mendeleev's family moved to Saint Petersburg in 1849, after a series of financial hardships.
Mendeleev eventually went to college at the "Main Pedagogical Institute." After recovering from
tuberculosis, he became a professor at Nikolaev Engineering Institute, where he met (and later married)
Feozva Nikitichna Leshcheva.

While teaching at Saint Petersburg University, he made a major discovery: if the elements were
categorized by atomic weight, they would line up in a specific pattern; elements showing similar
properties would be near to each other. This led to the modern periodic table. The Periodic Table was
shown to be correct when heavier elements were discovered, such as when gallium (Ga) and germanium
(Ge) were found in 1875 and 1886, both predicted by the periodic table.

There were many changes made to the periodic table over time, most notably the discovery that
the atomic number of an element (the number of protons in the nucleus) as a better organization
system, because of fluctuations in observations. The discovery of the new system (which is still in use
today) was made by Henry Mosley in 1913 after detailed examination.
