The Anchor Stone

Maori creation stories tell how Maui a legendary Polynesian voyager pulled the anchor stone (Stewart Island) from the sea floor to secure his canoe (South Island)
This stylised anchor chain symbolises the physical and spiritual connection between Stewart island and Bluff.

The telephone link

Until 1902 Stewart Island depended on small sailing vessels for communication with the main land. That year Sir Joseph Ward was appionted acting Prime Minister and grasped the oppertunity to fulfill a promise to his Island constituents and allowed just seven days to lay a submarine cable from Bluff to Stewart Island which came ashore here. In 1947 the submarine cable was replaced by microwave radio.
