The Final Turn
12:30 PM
Saturday March 2, 2013
When the Iditarod Sled Dog Race begins with the Ceremonial Start on the first Saturday in March, I’m about as ready to run from viewing area to viewing area as the pups are to pull those sleds from Willow to Nome. The official start is 10AM downtown. Maybe you had a chance to see it in person. Teams start at 5-minute intervals and “race” to the Campbell Airstrip area.
Join me at Campbell Airstrip. There will be 15 minutes to sign in, receive an Iditarod Challenge card and take a photo. You will be able to accrue points toward geocaching and Iditarod-themed awards as we play a game. In a way, there will be twists and turns to the challenge to make a game that simulates a board game such as chutes and ladders.
While we play, we will join the crowd cheering on the dogs and mushers on this day before the journey truly becomes real. After the event, you may wish to saunter over to the Campbell Creek Science Center and join in their Iditarod-related activities. NOTE: YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PARK AT CAMPBELL SCIENCE CENTER. There are free shuttles available. Press the link for the related web page to see more information about transportation and parking options, as well as what BLM has planned for this special day.
If you as crazy as I am about the Iditarod, then check out these events too.
