Geocache Description:

A small cache hidden near the boundary of the Church of St Michael and All Angels, Cofton Hackett. You will need to bring your own pen. The cache is not hidden within the Church grounds, but take a while to have a wander around - the snowdrops and bluebells are lovely if you are here in the spring and early summer. And don't let the trains that whiz past take you by surprise - the nearby train line is surprisingly busy!

Cofton Hackett is an ancient settlement mentioned in historical documents dating back to 780 AD. The spelling of the name has varied over the centuries: for many centuries, the usual spelling was Coston. However, the old form of the letter "S" in the middle of words, ‹ ſ ›, was only at some point in the last hundred years misread as a lower case "F", thus turning (Coston) into the present-day Cofton.
The Parish Church of St Michael and all Angels is said to have been built in 1182 as a chapel for Cofton Hall. The Church was substantially rebuilt in 1861 under the direction of the renowned architect Henry Day. Cofton Hall, formerly the manor-house of the Leicesters and Jolliffes, is where Charles I is said to have spent the night of 14 May 1645. The present building contains the original 14th Century Hall with an open timbered roof.
