Castillejos of Tetuán Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Salmoon: Hola,

Salmoon

Geocache Description:

Traditional magnetic cache south of Plaza de Castilla, in the area called Castillejos. Bring pen to sign the log. Special coin for the FTF.

One of the 6 wards of District 6 of Madrid (Tetuán) is Castillejos. When Leopoldo O’Donnell returned with his forces to Spain after the Battle of Tetouan (Morocco, 1861), he camped at a spot north of Madrid while a triumphal entry into the capital was being arranged.  The camp, which acquired permanent structures as well as shops over time, became the Madrid neighborhood known as "Tetuán de las Victorias" (Tetuán of the Victories). When an administrative re-organization took place in the 1960s, some of the villages close to Madrid were joined to the city, and so Tetuán de las Victorias became a district in the bigger city of Madrid. The battle of Tetuán and the fall of the city prevented further attacks on Ceuta and Melilla by Moroccan forces. O’Donnell acquired the noble title of "First Duke of Tetuán." Some areas of Tetuán feature very old houses and are inhabited by immigrants from South America and Sub-Saharan Africa. But also some of the most relevant skyscrapers, i.e. the Picasso Tower, are located here, making it an important business area.
