Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the Northeast corner of César E. Chavez Park, near the Berkeley Marina.

In addition to the ever-present fantastic bay views, if you go between October and April, you will have a chance for an added bonus: To see the Western Burrowing Owls which often use this area as their winter nesting grounds.  I saw one while placing the cache!

This cache unexpectedly became the second of what will now be a series of "wild bird caches"--each of which is named after wild bird species that I happened to see at the cache location while hiding it.

A mainstay for outdoor recreation in Berkeley for over two decades, César E. Chavez Park is open from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm.

Originally called "North Waterfront Park" when it officially opened in 1991, the park was re-named "César E. Chavez Park" in 1996 to honor the iconic Hispanic labor leader.

In addition to the aformentioned bay views and birdwatching, the 90-acre park also offers:
  • Large grassy areas with rolling hills (commonly used for flying kites, remote control aircraft and frisbee games).
  • Hiking trails; including the 1.25-mile (2.01 km) Dorothy Stegmann Trail around the park’s perimeter (which is fully wheelchair accessible)
  • A 17-acre off-leash dog area.
  • Dozens of picnic tables (many with BBQ grills and several arranged for large groups).
  • A Solar Calendar.
  • A wildlife sanctuary.

César E. Chavez Park also hosts Berkeley's annual Kite Festival in late-July and many informal Solstice/Equinox celebrations.

Because the park is VERY popular (especially when the weather is nice), stealth will be required.

Due to a reach issue, the cache may not be wheelchair accessible.
