You will find this cache at the foot of a wide trail that cuts through the McLaughlin Eastshore State Park.
The cache is one of my "wild bird caches"--each of which is named after wild bird species that I happened to see from GZ while hiding the cache.
This particular cache is dedicated to the Mallard--which is perhaps the best known duck in North America. Considered a marsh or "dabbling" duck, the drake (male) has very distinctive plumage including a brilliant green head with a white ring around his neck, a chestnut chest, a gray underside, blue/black accents on the inner wings and a white tail (with curled feathers to show his age--the more curls, the older the bird). As with many birds, the hens (females) have very drab plumage.
Typically, Mallards favor fresh water marshy environments but it is not uncommon to find them coastlines and estuaries--such as that around the Eastshore Park.
As I placed this cache, a flock of about twenty mallards were splashing about out in the bay, having a grand old time.
This cache is a nano hidden in a familiar style and could be a park and grab--but take some time to enjoy the view!
While McLaughlin Eastshore Park is officially closed from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am, the location of this cache makes it accessible 24/7.
Because of the slightly rough terrain around GZ (which can often be mud or standing water) during wet weather periods), this one is not wheelchair accessible.
Restrooms, picnic tables and water fountains are available at Cesar E. Chavez Park just down the road.
