Geocache Description:

Thornton Abbey was founded as a priory in 1139 by William le Gros, the Earl of Yorkshire, and raised to the status of Abbey in 1148. It was a house for Augustinian or black canons. The Abbey Gatehouse and ruins are well worth a visit, but it is only open to the public on certain days so check the web site first.

This is our first cache and replaces the one that was archived in 2012. housed in an interesting container, it includes log and pencil but there is little space for extras.
This is a very popular picnic site so some care is required.

ample parking, also a good spot for night searching.
Please be careful to put everything back correctly and place it back in the shadows.

*** UPDATE: - The abbey overnight (30/11/16) became a national headline as the discovery of human remains with traces of the black death within them was announced to the world. ***
