This cache is located at the Northern edge of the McLaughlin Eastshore State Park, near the soccer fields.
The cache is one of my "wild bird caches"--each of which is named after a wild bird species that I happened to see near GZ while hiding the cache.
This particular cache is dedicated to the Turkey Vulture--a rather homely but under-appreciated raptor with six-foot wingspan that rivals that of eagles.
Often seen gracefully soaring and circling at great heights--either alone or in groups--these birds use their amazing sense of smell to find carrion from hundreds of feet up. When found, they descend to sometimes pick a carcass clean in short order. By fulfilling this niche in the ecosystem, they play an invaluable role in the "Circle of Life."
As I searched for a location to place this cache, a single vulture whizzed by only about ten feet off the ground and only about twenty feet from me--so close I could clearly see his eyes on his bald orange head!
This cache is a bison placed not too far off the Northern leg of the perimeter trail around the park. While you will be searching in some cover, the parking lot for the nearby soccer fields is well within view and the trail sees a fair amount of traffic (especially on weekends) so be aware of muggles and use appropriate stealth.
Note that the McLaughlin Eastshore Park is closed from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am.
Because of some mildly rough terrain around GZ (which can include mud or standing water during wet weather periods), this one is not wheelchair accessible.
