Geocache Description:

Welcome to the village of Christian Malford in rural Wiltshire. In Saxon times it was known as Christmal-ford; the ford near Christ's Cross. Christian Malford is registered in the Domesday Book (1068). However, finds from near the river indicate much earlier occupation of the land to the Mesolithic Period. The small village lies on the B4069, just south of the M4, about 9 kms from Chippenham and13 kms from Wootton Bassett. Christian Malford is extremely well served with a 13th Century Church.

An interesting thing about Christian Malford is although there is a Station Road, the village did not actually have a train station. Instead it was served by a halt. It was situated close to the bridge on the Great Western Main Line which runs from London to Bristol.  The halt opened on 18th October 1926 and closed on 4th January 1965. It consisted of two timber platforms, each with a wooden shelter. Passengers used to buy their tickets from the local pub! There is no trace of the halt today.
