400 Feet Above the Fence Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Tom.dog: Retiring this cache after a healthy run. This was a fairly impromptu placement when I hiked up here over 11 years ago, and I’m not sure if I really expected it to last all that long. I was shocked to see that the container is in essentially the same shape today as it was when I hid it. After seeing numerous failed pill bottle hides over the years, the fact that this container - a plain white, no duct tape, no O-ring bottle hidden at the end of a ridge that experiences a pretty good beating by the elements - has survived so long with a dry log is pretty impressive.

Many thanks to those who made the find over the years, either as a stand-alone trip or while searching for DctrSpott’s nearby puzzle/multi. This one is getting removed largely because of long-term maintenance concerns I have about it (I don’t see this little pill bottle lasting forever and I’m not willing to put in a more “hardened” container at this location at the current time). I have recovered a hitherto unknown travel bug that was stashed in the container and will move it along.

Geocache Description:

A small cache placed about 400 feet above Fence Creek in Medicine Bow National Forest.

To get to the cache, park at the coordinates listed below in the additional waypoints. You can then weave your way along trails on either side of the creek until you get to a split in the valley. You can make the decision... Go left, go right, or go up. Either way, you will eventually reach the top of the hill (with some huffing and puffing), at an elevation roughly 8,225 feet. This hill is unmarked on the topos, so I figured it would be nice to bring a few more people to it.

Bring a little water and some good snow boots if you come in the winter as I did. The hillside is in the sun for most of the day, so it is relatively clear of snow. You can also grab it for a quick break on your way to Sheep Mountain, if this is your path of choice. In any case, please remember that this cache is about the hike and views, not the actual container. The hide is a very simple pill bottle a short ways from the top. See the spoiler photos if you need some help.

Good luck, I hope that you enjoy the short hike!
