Geocache Description:

Dublin Street Bridge

A new and different cache has been installed at this popular cache location now that the new walkway has been completed and replaces the previous archived one. New co-ords so take note.

For years, with the ever expanding city, came calls for a bridge to the fast growing suburb of Wanganui East and without it residents had to travel all the way downstream to the city bridge and then back up again. This site was finally selected in 1911 and a contract let for £26,000. However no riverbed soundings had been made prior to the contract being let and the contractors, Saunders Bros of Wellington found that it was impossible to sink the bores to the required depth of 30 feet. Eventually concrete filled cylinders were substituted for piles at an extra cost of £6500

The bridge, complete with two sets of tram lines was finally opened on the 3rd November 1914. Immediately complaints abounded about the narrowness of the bridge and the height of the bridge at the city end. This end of the bridge was deliberately raised to allow for the river steamers to safely pass under the bridge even with high water levels and at the point where the river was the deepest. Today the bridge is still often congested in both directions.

The cache is small and only contains a log, there is no real room for swaps. Beware of the muggles who can very suddenly appear without warning.

A good place to park is S39 55.325 E175 03.007 and then a pleasant stroll to GZ just be careful crossing the road.
It will pay to pick your time for this one as it can be very busy at certain times and you are in full view of the traffic.
