Youghal has a rich religious tradition, with many structures dating back to the 6th century.
The Holy Family Church, built in 1990, is one of four Catholic Churches in the parish. It is a modern building, spacious and bright, and the coloured glass windows to the back of the altar are a magnificent feature. The parish hall is attached to the church.
The 3 other Catholic Churches - St. Mary's, built in 1796, St. Ita's Church, built in Gortroe in 1907, and Our Lady of Lourdes, built in the Strand area in 1939, are all of a traditional design. St. Mary's in the town centre is the parish church, and is the oldest active Catholic church in the Diocese of Cloyne.
The town is dotted with the remains of previous churches, including South Abbey which was established by the Franciscans in 1224, North Abbey which was established by the Dominicans in 1267, the Benedictine Abbey in North Main Street which was established in 1350.
The Methodist Church in South Main Street was rebuilt in 1880, and is an architectural gem.
The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses is a brand new addition to the area's religious architecture, and was built in one weekend (see Kingdom Hall cache).
St. Mary's Collegiate Church, built in 1020 and the main Church of Ireland church in the area, is unrivalled in Ireland in its history and heritage (see St. Mary's Collegiate Church cache).
Youghal is also home to a growing Muslim population, and a host of other religions, whose prayer houses are in private homes.
Many people who do not subscribe to any faith, including Humanists, also reside in the town and surrounding area.
The cache is placed outside the church grounds, to the rear of the car-park. Follow the established path, through the break in the fence, and relax in the small grove of trees. It is a small plastic box.
