Another of my most favorite places on the Big Island! Finally got to visit this past fall. My aunt and my mother used to come here as children and eat their lunches. My family frequently comes here to fish, picnic and surf. There are two sections to the bay: as you are facing the ocean, the area to the right is where most people hang out. Children and adults surf in the bay near the mouth of the stream/river. The area to the left is rocky and you can fish from here or up on the small bluff before you come down the trail. You will need a 4WD to come all the way down to the beach! The last section of the road is an adventurous 4WD, but if you go slow, you will be just fine. If you don't have 4WD, most people park at the Halawa Catholic Cemetary and hike to the beach/bay. If you do the hike, it's about a mile one way. Bring water! There is no shelter during the hike until just before the bay. Sunscreen is also recommended. If you venture into the water, beware the waves. There is no lifeguard. The water is murky, so not suited for swimming/snorkeling. No facilities. Best time to visit: Summer months. Obviously turn at the listed RP below first before 'parking'. The road will curve to the left. At the fork, if you drive straight ahead you will run into 'Rainbow Trees', if you stay to the right at the fork you will head towards 'Remember Me', 'Kapanaia Bay', 'Kapalama Heiau' and 'Hale O Kaili Heiau'.
The historical significance of the bay is that it was a Kamehameha Canoe Landing.
