This cache is located about 300m down a rough trail off West Coast Road. There are numerous exposed roots and a couple of steepish sections, so please be careful and watch your footing.
One time, while doing some internet research, I came across this post on the Vancouver Island Big Trees blog. I duly noted it down on my to-do list and finally went to check it out on the May long weekend.
This trail starts at West Coast Road (see trailhead waypoint) and makes its way down through the forest until it meets the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail at Chin Beach. There's plenty of parking available on both sides of West Coast Road, and you can see quite a few cars parked here in the summer as people go down to the Juan de Fuca Trail from this point rather than at one of the ends.
After only about 5-10 minutes of hiking down the trail, you'll suddenly come across this giant Western redcedar in amongst all the other much smaller trees. Based on my wingspan, I estimate the diameter of the tree to be about 13 feet! If you look around in the surrounding forest on your way along the trail, you can actually spot a few massive stumps that must have been from some of this tree's deceased siblings. It's too bad most of them are gone now, but at least the loggers were good enough to leave this one for us to enjoy.
