Geocache Description:

Views of cool Roman ruins on a lovely stretch of the Appia Antica (that’s a bit further out than tourists usually make it)

Italiano (English below)

From this spot you can get a good look at the the Villa of the Quintilii (in Italian, Villa dei Quintili). The villa is an ancient Roman complex located past the fifth milestone along the Via Appia Antica, just outside the traditional boundaries of Rome, Italy. The nucleus of the villa was constructed in the time of Hadrian by the rich and cultured brothers Sextus Quintilius Maximus and Sextus Quintilius Condianus (consuls in 151 CE). The ruins are are so extensive that when they were first excavated, the site was dubbed Roma Vecchia ("Old Rome") by locals, as they occupied too great an area, it seemed, to have been anything less than a town. The villa included extensive thermae fed by their own aqueduct, and, more unusually, a hippodrome, which dates to the fourth century, when the villa became Imperial property (the emperor Commodus coveted the villa so strongly that in 182 he put to death its owners and confiscated it for himself.)

Nota bene: You cannot normally enter the grounds of the Villa from the Appia Antica. The entrance to the grounds of the ruins is quite far away from the geocache site, on Via Appia Nuova, number 1092.
