There's not much here except a cache,
so here's your  

 

Back in June 2011 when I was working for "a highway maintenance agency", I got stuck in the ditch just up the hill near the sign. There is a spring that drains to the creek by running down the ditch and it's always wet with 18 or so inches of mud there. The slightest deviation from the edge will pull even the largest of four wheel drive tractors into it. Well, we had to pull the sign up to get my tractor out and when we got it unstuck, the mud started closing in the hole. I saw something other than mud moving and investigated. There were two really large crawdads in the muddy mess.

Knowing my son liked using crawdads for fish bait, I found a cup to put them in and take home. After releasing them into the aquarium with the others, I saw that they were nearly completely black in color. I guess from the thick gooey mud they had lived in. Within a few days one of my new daddies had cannibalized all eight of the others in the tank, even the one I caught in the same mud. I guess he didn't like the way it looked after cleaning up. Whoa!

I still have my "pet" crawdad, his color has changed to reflect his clean water and it's quite trained. He no longer attacks when I feed him, I've made a little cave for him to hide in and watch the world go by. When he sees me standing in front of the tank, he gets ready for whatever treat I have for him. I catch moths, crickets or any other insect I can find and hold it in some forceps for him to take from me. In cold weather when I can't catch bugs, he's developed a taste for tiny pieces of dog food. I'm always amazed that I can sit and watch a creature that I knew so little about before I tried to make fish bait from it!
