Geocache Description:

A small cache hidden near a large Baobab tree, itself being part of a forest of such trees.

The Southern province of Dhofar is separated from Northern Oman by an inhospitable and mostly barren desert. Its flora and fauna is much closer aligned with Eastern Africa then with the Arabian peninsula. One good example of this is the typical East African tree, the Baobab, with its thick base smoothly tapering off to its thin upper branches.

Only in Dhofar can these trees, with their unmistakable profile, be admired; with one notable exception: a solitary Baobab tree in a wadi near Sohar, which has been adorned with its own separate cache:

Baobab Tree, GC2Q3GY

This tree has apparently been taken from Dhofar to Northern Oman as a souvenir and survived.

In the mountains above Mirbat a whole forest of these majestic trees can be admired. Judging by the size of some of them they are likely many centuries old. This forest marks the north eastern-most occurrence of these African trees. On one of them a small cache has been hidden containing just a logbook and a pencil but which could also fit a regular Geocoin. The cache has been camouflaged in a dark brown sock.

To reach the cache site take a turn-off from the main Salalah – Mirbat road at the coordinates given below and turn off on a sand track at the second set of coordinates below. The cache site can be reached with a normal saloon car.
