This is a multi-stage cache with a Letterbox Hybrid at the end. Inside the main container there are two smaller ones, one which has a rubber stamp in it, the other contains the log. Please do not take Stamp, and sorry, there's no inkpad. The cache is a round, black Lock-n-Lock box. The terrain is flat all the way and should be fairly dry under foot due to the sandy soil.
There is free parking down the road, but take care while walking from the car to the church and back as there is no pavement. The Church of St Gothian stands on an ancient site. The original Norman building had a chancel arch and two similar arches spanning the junctions of transepts and nave. These arches were built with sandstone or sandrock, an easliy worked rock obtained from the nearby cliffs at Godrevy. In the 15th century the church was enlarged with the addition of a south aisle and a fine west tower, battlemented, with light pinnacles and angels at the upper angles. It is a particularly good example of the skilled use of the local granite. The pinnacles are common on Cornish churches. By the 19th century the church was in very poor state repair. An almost complete reconstruction was required and between 1865-1867 the entire south aisle was removed to reinstate the original cruciform plan. Only the tower and its fine original tower arch remains of the 15th century building. The altar, of oak, has a beautiful crimson frontal embroidered by members of the family of the then rector, the Rev. Hooker, who bore the whole cost of this restoration including the building of an adjoining schoolroom; now the Church Hall. Two granite arches saved from the 15th century arcade were saved and built into the lychgate. The square bowl of the font is all that is left of the Norman church. It's date is circa 1150. When I visited the church there was a particularly good display of kneelers on shelves of the pews. See photo link below. 2014 marks the centenary of the start of the 1st World War. This multi will take you to some war graves and a war memorial. The English war graves here are unusual, as they are in a dark grey/black stone unlike the usual buff coloured sandstone seen in most other graveyards. Stage three is a French grave and is not like the English War Graves. “If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first at churchmicro@gmail.com so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication. There is also a Church Micro Stats & Information page found via the Bookmark list” Now for the cache hunt :- At the listed co-ords you will see the Gwithian Church war memorial, How many died in the 14 - 18 war ? =A. At stage two, B Hoskin died on the ? April 1917 =B. At stage three (French grave), Michel (of Finestere) died for France on ? / ? / 191? = C / D / 191E. The cache can be found at - N50*13.(C-A)(C-D)(E-B). W005*23.(D-A)(C-B)B. Thank you to Gwinear & Gwithian parish council for granting permission to place this cache on their Nature Reserve. This one is for Deb, the other half of Redruth Roamers, for her 60th.
