Located on the Riverwalk Trail. This cache is placed as a reminder of the history of Dan River Mills. Some of the buildings have been torn down yet some still remain. As you travel up and down the Riverwalk Trail you can still see signs of the past.

"The YMCA Has Replaced The Long Mill And The "Salt And Pepper Shakers"
The mills opened in 1882 as the Riverside Cotton Mills and grew to become the largest textile firm in the South.The Mills expanded rapidly, with four mills built within the company's first decade of operations. In 1895 a group that included five of the six original founders set up the Dan River Power and Manufacturing Company so that they could develop the water power of the Dan River. In 1909, Riverside and Dan River merged to form the Riverside and Dan River Cotton Mills. Then in 1946 the company changed its name to Dan River Mills, Incorporated, and eventually became Dan River Inc. in 1970. Sadly the operation fell victim to cheaper goods overseas as many other companies have.
