A small cache to mark my childhood. Easy one, you're looking for a nano.
Corria o ano de 1983 quando para aqui se mudou a minha família, que até hoje se encontra ainda neste bairro. Nos meus tempos de infância, era apenas a estrada que liga a nacional 10 ao bairro que existia. Para trás dos prédios mais velhos encontrava-se apenas um enorme Olival que chegava até à Quinta da Piedade. Não havia praticamente trânsito nenhum (a maior parte das pessoas não tinham carro). Foram muitas as vezes que brinquei no Olival, em cima das árvores que eram as nossas naves espaciais, fortes, etc. Nessa altura, esta zona chama-se Quinta dos Caniços (nome dado pelos caniços que aqui se encontravam).
Mais tarde foi construída uma estrada que ligava o bairro à Quinta da Piedade. Foi então que os autocarros começaram a circular para as escolas (tanto as da Quinta da Piedade como a do Forte da Casa). O bairro já não era tão sossegado, mas as crianças era agora adolescentes. Cresciam as rivalidades entre a parte de cima e a parte de baixo do bairro. Para marcarmos território, começámos a chamar Hollywood City à parte de baixo e Hollywood Barracas à parte de cima! Por esta altura, o bairro tinha o nome de Bairro Quinta dos Caniços ou Bairro dos Caniços.
O tempo passou e os adolescentes cresceram. Estudaram, trabalharam, formaram família. Uns ficaram, outros saíram para outros lados, mas a ligação ao bairro manteve-se. A maneira de descrever o crescer neste bairro é comparada ao crescer-se numa aldeia em que todos se conhecem e se dão bem (ou não).
Hoje, já quase com 30 anos, mantenho o nome que sempre foi usado enquanto aqui vivi... Marquinho. E se alguém me chamar Marco, provavelmente não respondo. Hoje o bairro chama-se simplesmente Caniços.

It was the year of 1983 when my family moved to this place, and still remains in this neighbourhood. During my childhood, it was only there was only a road connecting the nacional 10 to the neighbourhood. Behond the oldest building there was a massive Olive tree field reaching Quinta da Piedade. There was virtually no traffic (most people did not have a car). I played several times in these fields, on top of the olive trees, which turned into our spaceships, fortresses, etc. By then, this area was called Quinta dos Caniços (name given by the reeds found here).
Later on a road was built connecting the neighbourhood to Quinta da Piedade. It was then that the buses starting running here taking kids to schools (both in Quinta da Piedade and Forte da Casa). The neighbourhood wasn't so peaceful then, and the children were now teenagers. The rivalries between the upper and the lower side of the neighbourhood grew. In order to mark the territories, we started calling Hollywood City to the lower part and Hollywood Barracas (sheds) to the upper side! By then, the neighbourhood was called Bairro Quinta dos Caniços or Bairro dos Caniços.
Time moved on and the teenagers grew. They've studied, worked and started a family. Some stayed, some moved away, but the connection to this place remained. In order to describe how it was to grow up in this place, one has to say it was like growing in a small village where everyone knows everyone and get along (or not).
Today, almost 30 years old, I keep the name I used while I lived here... Marquinho (Little Marco). And if someone calls me Marco, I probably won't answer. Today, the neighbourhood is simply called Caniços.
