Geocache Description:

A simple cache placed on the path which goes around Crownhill fort. You do not need to enter the fort and the cache has not been place in or on the side of the path next to the deep ditch/moat. Please be aware of muggles. Cache placed with the kind permission of the Landmark Trust.

Lord Parlmerson, who was a Prime Minister in the Victorian times built a ring of forts around Plymouth, to protect the Naval dock yard from French attack and bombardment . Crownhill fort which was designed by Captain Edmund Fredrick Du Cane and at the time was at the cutting edge of Victorian fort design. The guns at Crownhill fort were never used in battle and advances in artillery soon made the fort obsolete. It is the best preserved fort in Plymouth. Until 1983 the army used the fort and therefore it had no major alterations. The fort is maintained by the Landmark Trust, who occasionally hold open days. More details about the fort and when the open days are at  http://www.crownhillfort.co.uk
