I was inspired to place this cache after a family trip to Weindorfer’s Chalet and Cradle Mountain.
Kate Weindorfer (nee Cowle) was born in Fingal Tasmania in 1863 as one of nine children and moved to the Devonport area with her family in the 1880s. In 1894 upon the death of her father, she obtained financial independence and moved to Melbourne where she joined the Field Naturalist’s Cub of Victoria to further her interest in botany. It was here she met her future husband and business partner, Austrian born Gustav Weindorfer. Once they were married (against the wishes of her family) Kate bought a farm at Kindred and later, a parcel of land up at Cradle Mountain. Together with Gustav, they explored the mountain area and then lobbied for it to be established as a National Park. Kate was the first European woman to reach the summit of Cradle Mountain – an amazing achievement even today and she did it in a long skirt!
Kate died in 1916 after a long illness. She was a pioneer in tourism and conservation.
The small sistema cache container is not placed at the grave site, which has been waypointed separately. Please be respectful of this old cemetery and the memorials.
