Geocache Description:

This random engine in the middle of nowhere will take you right back in time to when wood meet metal. A time when Awaroa was a buzzing town. This steam engine can be found either by boating in at high tide or walking around at low from the Awaroa DOC hut.

Awaroa Steam Engine, 1850 (This is the date the engine was built. It was put on site in1909) John Black used this steam engine to drive a mill which ground bark from black beech as a resource in the tanning process. After a few years bark was superseded as a material for tanning. The steam engine now lies before you at the head of the Awaroa Inlet.
