Fangorn Forest Redux >No Mondays< Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Geocaching HQ Admin: The City of Portland has a new geocaching policy for geocaches placed on Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) property. The policy is intended to support the growing recreational activity of geocaching while also ensuring it does not negatively impact parks, properties, assets, staff or the public.

PP&R welcomes geocaches in many of its parks and properties. However, the property where this geocache is located is one that does not allow geocaches according to the new policy. (Note: Forest Park is divided into three management units - the northernmost unit between Germantown Road and Newberry does not allow geocaches.)

There are many reasons a park may not allow geocaches, based on the determination of the staff who manage each particular site. These reasons can include that the property’s primary focus is on habitat values, the potential conflicts with other park users, among other factors. Because this geocache is in a park that does not allow them, it been archived. As the geocache owner, you are expected to retrieve the geocache container and any associated physical stages within 2 weeks. After August 27th, your geocache may be removed by parks’ staff or other designated persons.

For questions about this policy, please contact Bryan Aptekar, Portland Parks & Recreation, bryan.aptekar@portlandoregon.gov.

Geocache Description:

CLOSED ON MONDAYS Open Tues-Sat 9 to 4, Sun 1-4 This is a re-do of one of the great RoyBatty's caches. This cache was archived, even though the container was still in place and had good coords. I found it after it had laid dormant for 3+ years and decided to get it back into action. You will be looking for the original container and contents, although it needed to be moved a bit. I've saved as much of the original RoyBatty text as possible.

Leach Botanical Gardens - Portland Parks Bureau. 15 acres of cool trees, manicured trails, Johnson Creek, and more. See their website for more info at www.leachgarden.org. Free entrance. Closed Mondays. Parking across the creek/street, lot is on SE 122nd Ave. This place is a tree lover's sanctuary. Lots of varieties and many are labeled. Go to the initial coordinates and in this general vicinity look for a small fountain where a lion's head pours water into 8 scalloped trays. Next to this is a plaque. What is the year on this plaque? [Checksum for the 4 digits added together is 21.] Now go to the School Site waypoint and look for the site of an OLD schoolhouse [You will pass through at least one gate opening, depending on the path you choose]. Find out, from the plaque, what year the school was constructed. [Checksum for the 4 digits added together is 22.] Add the fountain plaque year to the decimal minutes of the following dummy coordinate for the final location's true NORTH coordinate: 45 26.486 Add the school construction year to the decimal minutes of the following dummy coordinate for the final location's true WEST coordinate: 122 30.297 The cache itself is a square-ish clear-plastic jar with a screw-top lid, 6" tall and 4" wide. You should be able to touch the cache while keeping one foot on the trail.
