Geocache Description:

Another in the BCDR Bridge series.

Where Ards Tech (Or whatever fancy name it's got these days) stands, there was once an all singing, all dancing, Train Station.
For 100 years, from May 1850 'till the last train ran on the 22nd April, 1950, trains carried goods and passengers from Newtownards through Comber to Belfast, and to the coast at Donahadee.

Sadly there is little or no trace of the station remaining today, and sadly few, if any, of the current students attending said educational facility will be aware that there was even a Railway through Newtownards, let alone that were they now study (Their mobile phones mostly, it would seem!) was once a substantial Railway Station!

Above are a couple of early pictures of the station, and below, a photo of the yard.

The approach to the station from the Comber side of the line was across the bridge on North Street. Again, sadly, no trace of this bridge remains, but as the photographs show, it was a substantial piece of architecture.

With some Railway workers taking a break,

These pictures are looking from Newtownards towards Upper North Street and as you will see, the area looks a lot different now.
The cache, due to the lack of hiding places, is a Micro with just a log, and is hidden just a bit away from where the bridge was, indeed the gateway on the left may be a bit of a clue!

As always, take care, especially with offspring, and be as stealthy as you like, there are usually plenty of folk about!!
