Geocache Description:

You are seeking a short two stage multi cache that begins at the weathered grave marker for Father Michael Dougherty. His grave can be found near the entrance to Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in downtown Tuscaloosa.

Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church is the oldest Catholic church in the state of Alabama outside of the city of Mobile. Built in 1845, of bricks made by hand and dried in the sun, the wood in the church being hand-hewn pine, the church is rich with history.

In 1858, Father Michael Dougherty became the resident pastor. He was ordained in 1857, and Saint John’s was the only Parish that he served. He died the same year he became the pastor. In 1890, as part of an improvement project, the grave marker you are seeking was placed in memory of Father Dougherty.

One other pastor that gained notoriety was Father William McDonogh. On April 4, 1865 he accompanied Mayor Obediah Berry to the brow of the river hill where he surrendered the city to General John T. Croxton of the Union army.

To locate the final, gather information from the grave marker for Father Michael Dougherty.
