Aviation History: Glover Field

The Staduim

Glover Field is located in an area that is now known as Peaceful Valley. The land was purchased by the city of Spokane in 1912 and turned into an athletic field called The Stadium. The stadium boasted a six lap running track and graded bleachers that could hold 10,000 people. The Stadium was used by the local high schools for football games and track meets. It also was used to house fairs, shows and carnivals. On October 31, 1917 the field was renamed Glover Field and it was dedicated to one of the founding fathers of Spokane, James N. Glover. The stadium continued to be used even though in 1925 the bleachers were condemned. Eventually the high schools acquired their own stadiums and no longer had a need for Glover Field. In 1937 the bleachers were taken down because they had fallen into disrepair. However Glover Field continued to remain in use. Glover Field became home to the Peaceful Valley Community Center in 1950 and a playground and baseball diamond were built to accommodate the youth coming to the Community Center.

Prior to 1913, Spokane’s early aviators and exhibition flyers from elsewhere had used a variety of locations, including the fairgrounds east of the city, a city golf course at Parkwater (now called Felts Field) and Glover Athletic Field along the river at the west end of downtown. In 1912 city fathers, concerned about the safety of airplanes using Glover Field, passed legislation to stop the practice of landing on Glover Field. Felts Field, to the east of Spokane, ultimately was developed into one of the finest airports in the Northwest.
