Small micro left as an offering.....
Cache is located on top of Sagamore Hill in Ipswich at the burial ground of the Agawam Indians...Masconomet was a peaceful but powerful Sachem(Chief) of the Agawam Indians who ruled most of Essex County, from Cape Ann to the New Hampshire border, extending inland as far as Lawrence to the north and Peabody to the south...Around 1617, the Agawam tribe was decimated by a plague(probably small pox) that lasted 3 years...When John Winthrop(first govenor of MA)see GCTRND) arrived in 1630, Masconomet paddled out to the "Arabella" to meet him...Masconomet was able to converse in English, even though Algonquin was his native tongue...By 1638, the dwindled tribe lived mainly in Ipswich...Masconomet sold the land to Winthrop, turned to Christianity and became a member of the Massachusetts Bay Colony...In 1658, Masconomet died and was buried with his gun and tomahawk here, one of the tallest and most prominent hills in the area...In 1910, a large stone was carved and placed to honor the great "Sagamore of the Agawams"...Though I am not a big fan of PNG placements, I just couldn't resist placing an offering for such a man(and quite possibly a relative of mine)...Please be respectful of the area for it is a place of both spirituality and honor to Native Americans....... Kudos to Geoknot on the FTF........
