There is a saying that you can't tell a book by its cover. While that may be true, you CAN tell a pine tree by its needles. It seems like everywhere I go people look at a pine tree and say "That's a Jack Pine!" They say it with conviction, but it don't make it so. How do I know? There is no such thing as a Jack Pine. Well maybe that isn't exactly true because it seems whatever pine species is the most abundant in any given area earns that title.
Out here in the west, meaning on the right side of the Rockies, which of course is the left side of the Rockies and more specifically upon this Island in the Pacific there are only a couple.
The White Pine like all pines has its needles growing in bunches and you can count them, there are 5. They are slender, straight, moderately flexible and soft to touch. Bluish-green the needles also have a whitish bloom. The edges are very finely toothed. The tree suffers from White Pine Blister Rust which uses the Flowering red currant as an alternate host. Most of the trees infected with this disease eventually die from it.
The other Pine on our rock has 2 needles grouped together and they are normally 2-7 cm long. This is the Lodgepole Pine. It usually grows on rocky outcrops or in wet boggy spots. In neither spot does it attain much height. The needles are often spirally twisted, stiff, very sharp-pointed and a much darker green that those of the White Pine.Blister Rust is not a problem with the Lodgepole but they do sometimes exhibit cankers as exhibited on this little guy that is hiding our cache.
